How to Remove a Temporary Pre-Existing Condition from Your Pet's Policy

Created by Insurance Team Petsy, Modified on Tue, 12 Nov, 2024 at 1:27 PM by Insurance Team Petsy

If your pet has been symptom-free for the required period and the review date has passed, you can request to have this pre-existing condition exclusion removed from your policy. You'll need to provide proof from your vet that the condition has been successfully treated, cured, or resolved.

Steps to Update Your Pet's Policy to Remove a Temporary Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion

1. Visit Your Vet:

At your next scheduled vet appointment, have your vet confirm that the condition has been treated, cured or resolved, noting that there were no signs or symptoms of the condition during the review period.

2. Check the Documentation Requirements:

Refer to the “supporting information required to review” section of your Certificate of Insurance to determine if specific documents or tests, such as blood tests or urinalysis are needed. If no additional documents are required, a simple confirmation from your vet that the condition is treated, cured or resolved is sufficient.

3. Notify Us After Your Vet Visit and Submit Documentation

After your vet appointment, please inform us so we can update our records. We’ll contact your vet for an updated medical history. If a request form was already provided to us, please submit the additional documentation within 14 days.

4. Review Process

Our team will review the documentation, including confirmation provided by your vet.

5. Policy Update

Following a successful review, we will remove the exclusion from your policy. An updated Certificate of Insurance will be sent to you, confirming these changes.

Understanding Your Certificate of Insurance

  • Pre-existing Condition: This section lists any conditions that your pet showed signs or symptoms of in their medical history, before you started a pet insurance policy or during the exclusion period.
  • Is the Condition Reviewable?: A "Yes" means the condition is temporary and can be reviewed after a specified period if your pet showed no signs or  symptoms of the condition. A "No" indicates it’s a chronic condition, which is not reviewable and therefore not covered by the policy.
  • Earliest Review Date: This is the earliest date we can look to remove the exclusion for the condition from your policy, assuming there have been no sign or symptoms of the condition.
  • Required Supporting Information: This section details any necessary documentation or tests required for the review process, such as blood tests, or urinalysis. These documents help us verify that the condition has been treated, cured or resolved and that there were no signs or symptoms of it during the review period. If no documents or tests are listed, a simple confirmation from your vet that the condition is treated, cured or resolved is sufficient.

Helpful Reminders for Pet Parents

  • Coverage for Unexpected Events: Our policy is specifically designed to help with unexpected health issues. It's important to remember that chronic pre-existing conditions that were present before you started your policy or during the exclusion period, are not covered.
  • Understanding Pre-existing Conditions: Conditions that appear before your coverage begins or during an exclusion period are considered pre-existing conditions. We will identify these based on your pet's medical history during the pre-existing condition assessment, if you request such an assessment soon after you take out the policy.
  • Process for Removing an Exclusion: To remove an exclusion, we require confirmation from your vet that the condition has been treated, cured or resolved.
  • Routine Check-Ups: Please note that routine health check-ups are not covered by our policy.
  • Coverage for New Conditions: Even if your pet has pre-existing conditions, you can still submit claims for new and unrelated issues that arise, as long as they occur after any applicable exclusion periods.
